In the summer of 2010, after hearing my friend’s moving account of living through an earthquake in Haiti, I found myself walking off a plane in Port-au-Prince into 100-degree heat with 72 other people.
I have seen poverty before, but was not even remotely prepared for what I witnessed that day. There was absolute destruction in every direction. During the 80-minute bus ride from Port-au-Prince to Carrefour the devastating scenery went unchanged. I felt utterly hopeless. How could I possibly make a difference in this chaos?
Throughout the week, my question was answered. By building, ministering, and spending time with the locals, the group helped make a difference, one person at a time.
Before this experience, my take on world disasters had always been to look away, to turn the newspaper to the next page. However, I came away from this trip with a new appreciation for others in need. I learned that the people of Haiti are incredible. They have nothing, yet everything. They are faithful, hopeful and accepting. It was not long before I realized I needed to further my help.
As of today, conditions in Haiti remain largely unchanged. While some progress is being made, there is still much to do.
- More than 79,000 people still live in tents
- Only 37,000 shelters have been repaired, rebuilt or built since the 2010 earthquake
- There is still not enough food, clean water, and medical care available
Mission E4 has led groups on multiple mission trips to Haiti with the goal of ameliorating these conditions by rebuilding schools and restoring structures damaged in the quake. More mission trips are scheduled for the future, with plans to establish an orphanage for boys and continue re-building the area.
